What the evidence says. The inulin-type fibres used have solid trial evidence for raising gut Bifidobacterium at 5 g/day or more, but the drinks themselves have not been tested in trials, a 2 g can is below most studied doses, and a microbiome shift has not been shown to produce clinical benefit in healthy people. (Preliminary evidence: Early or small human trials; promising but not yet conclusive.)

What is Prebiotic Sodas (Olipop, Poppi)?

Prebiotic Sodas (Olipop, Poppi) (Low-sugar sodas with added inulin, agave or cassava fiber) is a prebiotic fiber used for far less sugar than regular soda (about 2-5 g vs ~39 g per can). NutriDex grades the human evidence as Preliminary. Prebiotic sodas such as Olipop and Poppi are low-sugar sparkling drinks (typically 2-5 g sugar, partly sweetened with stevia) with added fibre: about 2 g of agave inulin in a Poppi and roughly 6-9 g from cassava fibre and chicory and Jerusalem-artichoke inulin in an Olipop. Inulin-type fructans reliably raise gut Bifidobacterium in trials, but those studies typically use 5-20 g a day for weeks, and higher bacterial counts have not been shown to improve health outcomes in healthy people. A 2 g dose sits below most tested amounts; a daily Olipop comes closer. Poppi's maker settled a US class action over its 'gut healthy' marketing for $8.9 million (final approval April 2026) without admitting wrongdoing. The fair verdict: swapping a full-sugar cola for one of these is a reasonable harm-reduction move and the fibre is a modest bonus, but a can is not a microbiome treatment. Whole-food fibre is where the evidence lies. See also NutriDex's Inulin and Agave Nectar entries.

Purported Benefits

✓Far less sugar than regular soda (about 2-5 g vs ~39 g per can)
✓Adds some fibre: ~2 g (Poppi) to ~6-9 g (Olipop) per can
✓(Claimed) 'gut healthy' microbiome support: untested for the drinks themselves
✓(Claimed) digestion and immunity benefits: no product-level trials

Dosing & Compounds

Typical Dose
About 2 g fibre per 12 oz can of Poppi and roughly 6-9 g per can of Olipop (check the label; formulas vary by flavour). Most inulin trials used 5-20 g/day for 2+ weeks; adults are advised to eat 25-29 g of total fibre daily.
Active Compounds
Agave inulin (Poppi)Cassava root fibre, chicory and Jerusalem-artichoke inulin (Olipop)Stevia and small amounts of cane sugar or fruit juiceApple cider vinegar (Poppi)

Safety & Cautions

Generally safe for most people. Inulin and other fructans are high-FODMAP and can cause gas, bloating and loose stools, particularly in people with IBS, who may react to as little as 2 g. Sodas are still acidic and some contain fruit juice or cane sugar, so frequent sipping can affect teeth. People with diabetes should read labels for total sugar, and children and those relying on these drinks for 'gut health' should get fibre mainly from whole foods. Educational only — always check with your doctor or pharmacist before combining Prebiotic Sodas (Olipop, Poppi) with any medicine.
