What the evidence says. Graded banned: a systematic review found no human evidence for any therapeutic use, while case reports document methaemoglobinaemia, haemolysis, kidney failure and death, and US regulators and courts treat it as an unapproved, dangerous drug. (Banned / Harmful evidence: Linked to serious harm and/or banned in sport and many jurisdictions. Listed for awareness and safety only — NOT a recommendation.)
⚠
Health warning. MMS and 'CDS' products make chlorine dioxide, an industrial bleach; drinking it cures no disease and can cause severe vomiting, dehydration, oxygen-starved blood (methaemoglobinaemia), kidney failure and death — never give it to children.

What is Chlorine Dioxide ('MMS')?

Chlorine Dioxide ('MMS') (ClO₂ / acidified sodium chlorite ('Miracle Mineral Solution')) is a banned or harmful substance marketed for cure for autism. NutriDex grades the human evidence as Banned / Harmful. Miracle Mineral Solution (MMS), also sold as 'CDS' or 'Master Mineral Solution', is a sodium chlorite solution that users mix with an acid 'activator' to make chlorine dioxide — a bleaching agent used to treat water and paper pulp. Since the late 2000s it has been promoted online as a cure for autism (including enemas given to children), malaria, HIV, cancer and, from 2020, COVID-19. There is no credible human evidence for any of these claims; a 2020 systematic review found no studies supporting its use against COVID-19. The FDA has warned since 2010, and again in 2019 and 2020, that drinking these products is the same as drinking bleach. Reported poisonings include severe vomiting and diarrhoea, methaemoglobinaemia (blood that cannot carry oxygen), red-cell destruction, kidney failure needing dialysis, bowel perforation and death. In 2023 a US federal jury convicted the Grenon family, leaders of the 'Genesis II Church of Health and Healing' that sold MMS as a 'sacrament'; two sons received 151-month prison sentences.

Marketed Claims (unproven)

✕(Claimed) cure for autism
✕(Claimed) treats or prevents COVID-19, malaria and HIV
✕(Claimed) cures cancer
✕(Claimed) kills 'pathogens' and detoxifies the body

Dosing & Compounds

Use & Legality
No safe or effective dose — do not drink, gargle, inject or use it as an enema. Trace chlorine dioxide left in treated tap water (US limit 0.8 mg/L) is a disinfection residue, not a medicine.
Active Compounds
Sodium chlorite (sold as a ~22–28% solution)Chlorine dioxide (ClO₂), formed when mixed with a citric or hydrochloric acid 'activator'

Safety & Cautions

Drinking MMS or chlorine dioxide solutions can cause severe vomiting, diarrhoea and dehydration, life-threatening low blood pressure, methaemoglobinaemia (grey-blue skin, breathlessness, 'chocolate-brown' blood), red-blood-cell destruction and acute kidney failure; enemas can damage the bowel lining. Children with autism given 'protocols' by parents are a particularly exposed group, and using MMS instead of real treatment for malaria, HIV, cancer or COVID-19 can be fatal. If someone has swallowed it, call Poison Control (1-800-222-1222 in the US) or emergency services immediately — methaemoglobinaemia and kidney injury may need hospital treatment. Report sellers to the FDA (MedWatch) or your national regulator. Educational only — always check with your doctor or pharmacist before combining Chlorine Dioxide ('MMS') with any medicine.
