L-Carnitine vs CLA: Which Fat-Loss Supplement Actually Works?

L-carnitine and CLA are fixtures of the fat-burner aisle. L-carnitine ferries fatty acids into mitochondria to be burned — a real physiological role that supplement marketing stretches far past the evidence. CLA is a group of linoleic-acid isomers from dairy and beef, sold almost exclusively for fat loss. Both have been through many randomized trials, so unusually for this category, we can compare actual pooled numbers rather than mechanisms and promises.

L-carnitine wins, though the bar is low. Meta-analyses show roughly 1–1.5 kg more weight loss than placebo at around 2 g/day over weeks to months — small, consistent, and more visible in people with obesity or metabolic disease; it also has legitimate evidence in other areas (exercise recovery, some cardiac and fertility endpoints). CLA's pooled effect is real but tiny — about 0.5–1 kg over months at 3.2–6.4 g/day — and the trans-10,cis-12 isomer that drives fat loss in animals has been linked to worsened insulin sensitivity and inflammatory markers in some human studies, an ugly trade for a kilogram. Neither remotely substitutes for a calorie deficit: diet and resistance training dwarf both effects. If you want a supplement with any fat-loss evidence and a cleaner risk profile, L-carnitine is the defensible pick; CLA is hard to recommend at all. Note that oral L-carnitine raises TMAO in some people (long-term cardiovascular relevance still debated), and omnivores usually get plenty from red meat.
